The original 4711 formula was first produced in 18th century Germany. Invigorating citrus top notes create a tart, stimulating scent, followed by light florals and warm musk. It is a refreshing, sporty fragrance worn by men and women. The dominant note in Original 4711 is bergamot, a tangy fresh oil derived from a nonedible citrus fruit grown mostly under sunny Italian skies.
The history of 4711 Original is as rich as the fragrance; a Carthusian monk reputedly developed, or came by, the eighteenth-century formulation. The fragrance takes its name from an address, Glockengasse No. 4711, Koln. The name and the scent have long endured. The elagantly tooled label remains unchanged. The cologne is housed in a handsome gold-coloured bottle, embellished with torquoise lettering. A spritz of history, indeed.
