Swisse Women's Ultivite - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What's so different about the Swisse Women's Ultivite Formula? How will I benefit?
Swisse Women's Ultivite is one of the world's only Multivitamin Antioxidant formulae that's scientifically validated. It has proven therapeutic benefits based on double blind, placebo controlled clinical studies.

Based on over 20 years of research, Swisse Women's Ultivite Formula was developed to assist in peak performance and well-being. Swisse is an Australian company that's been dedicated solely to natural medicine research for over 50 years, and the Swisse brand is one of the most highly recommended. It's one of the No. 1 choices of consumers locally and globally desiring health and success. Swisse Women's Ultivite incorporates all the vitamins, minerals and herbs that are important to women's health, in a balance that's based on scientific validation. It also contains antioxidants and stamina nutrients like ginseng. The herbs may assist with improving stress adaptation, relieving stress, nervous tension, mild anxiety as well as symptoms of PMT (use only as directed and see your health care professional if symptoms persist). You see, one of the necessities for good health is to provide the body with all the important vitamins and minerals it requires to develop and function properly. One of the main reasons we may suffer from the symptoms of tiredness and general illness may be related to nutritional deficiencies. If you provide the body with the important nutrients necessary for wellbeing, in many cases you'll alleviate the problem. That's where the Swisse Women's Ultivite has been so successful.
The formula also contains a natural carotenoid complex incorporating betacarotene, alphacarotene, lutein, cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin to maximise the antioxidant effect. Antioxidants assist in protecting our body from harmful free-radical damage.

The Swisse Women's Ultivite is a once-a-day formula available in tablets and capsules for ease of swallowing, or those desiring half the standard dosage - which can still be much more potent and effective than some other popular brands on the market (with capsules, you take 2 per day). The Swisse formula contains effective, clinical potencies of many vital nutrients, so in most cases it's not necessary to take additional supplements. Most importantly, Swisse is a Tri-Synergy Formula and we'll talk about Tri-Synergy later on. However, we'd like to bring your attention to the fact that there are two Swisse Women's Ultivite formula. What's the key difference you ask? We'll explain this in point 2.

2. What's the difference between the two Swisse Women's Ultivite Formulae?
The key difference is that one (of the Swisse Formulae) is clearly marked 'No Iron or Iodine', and has a blue cap. The reason for that is simple.

Some women have too much iron - a term usually referred to as 'iron overload' - there are two main forms of iron overload, namely haemochromatosis and haemosiderosis. Haemochromatosis is a hereditary condition that's caused by excessive iron absorption due to a genetic disorder. Iron overload could also be caused by taking massive doses of dietary iron, or repeated blood transfusions, causes haemosiderosis (condition characterized by the deposition of brown pigment called hemosiderin in the liver and other tissues). Avoid taking large doses of dietary iron supplements unless under medical supervision and for a limited period of time. Other causes of iron overload include metabolic and genetic disorders such as thalassaemia. The Swisse Women's Ultivite 'No Iron or Iodine' Formula is free from iron and iodine, and contains reduced amounts of nutrients known to enhance iron absorption and retention. The Swisse formula also incorporates a higher amount of herbal ingredients to assist in promoting healthy liver function that's so vital in this case. So if any of the aforementioned affect you, the Swisse Women's 'No Iron or Iodine' formula is best suited. Otherwise, you can use the Swisse Women's Formula 1 - the one that has the red cap.

3. Who else could use the Swisse Women's Ultivite 'No Iron or Iodine' Formula?
The Swisse Women's Ultivite 'No Iron or Iodine' Formula is most suited to those who have possible iron overload, or if they already get enough iron in their diet:

a) Women who react adversely to dietary iron, causing constipation.
b) Women who experience a lack of or diminished menstrual bleeding (as this may signal iron overload).
c) If you have noticeably red skin, increased skin pigmentation, bronze hue or slate grey coloration. Or if you have 'reverse freckling', with small pigment free areas scattered over conspicuous slate grey discoloration of the skin.
d) If you consume more than two serves of red meat per day (freshly cooked), you'd most likely be getting adequate iron, and in this case you may also find more suitable the Swisse Women's 'No Iron or Iodine' Formula.
e) If you use other supplements containing over 5mg of elemental iron or suffer from ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, hepatitis or during acute infection.
f) Iodine is another mineral that some of us must approach cautiously. If you have been informed by your practitioner that you have a thyroid gland disorder, or suffer from dehydration, heat cramps, adrenal insufficiency and cardiac disease, then you may need to avoid taking iodine supplements. In this case, the Swisse Women's 'No Iron or Iodine' Formula may be suitable. As always, first consult you health care professional.

4. What is the Swisse Tri-Synergy Formulation about?
Tri- SynergyT is another reflection of the benchmark standards and extra benefits behind the Swisse Formulae. Tri-SynergyT defines 3 key advantages that differentiate the Swisse products from other brands and keeps them at the forefront of medical research...

i) Tri-Clinical Potencies - the right combination with the right amount
Tri-clinical is the first of the Tri-synergyT benefits. Swisse Women's and Men's Ultivite Formulae are some of the only products incorporating clinical potencies, based on the assessment of scientific studies - not theoretic RDA's/RDI's. Such clinical potencies have shown to be effective in delivering immediate and long term health benefits. The clinical potencies also work in synergy to promote wellbeing and give you the desired results. Take vitamin C for example. It's a vital nutrient, however too much of it can deplete other important nutrients. Too much vitamin B1 may deplete vitamin B3. Conversely, too little of some nutrients is useless, and so on. The Swisse formulae ensure that you get the right combination with the right amount for peak performance and well-being.

ii) Tri-Matrix - redefining 'Maximum Absorption'
Tri-Matrix is the second of the Tri-synergy benefits. You are what you absorb and retain, not just what you eat (or ingest). Even if you're on the best diet in the world but have a sluggish digestive system or absorption disorders, you can still suffer from nutritional deficiencies. The biggest portion of most fruits and vegetables -up to 95% or more - is water and fibre. The balance is some of the most valuable vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These nutrients however are attached to fibre molecules. Fibre cannot be absorbed and passes through the digestive system in totality. Those people with digestive and assimilative problems or people on excessively high fibre diets may find that the fibre sometimes takes these nutrients with it, preventing their absorption. Swisse's Tri-matrix Formulae contain the pure grade of nutrients that are quickly assimilated into the bloodstream. The Swisse Tri-Matrix Formulae also ensures rapid disintegration, which allows the product to disperse within minutes after you swallow it. However, more than absorption is required.

It's about absorption and retention.
Absorption is the beginning of the end. Once absorbed, nutrients then need to be delivered to our cells and retained there for an adequate time for them to be utilised by the body for their therapeutic benefits. Otherwise they're almost useless. That's where Swisse's Tri-matrix Formulae also increases the bioavailability and retention factor (nutrient uptake and duration of use by the cells). This means that when you take the Swisse Formulae in the morning, you'll feel the benefits of stress relief, increased stamina and well-being throughout the day - not just 2 or 3 hours.

Natural Source, Standardised Extracts
Swisse also use natural source, standardised extracts and water-soluble nutrients whenever possible. That allows us to guarantee a consistency in benchmark standards every time. It also means better absorption, and retention, and can prevent toxicity. Take vitamin A for example. There are two main forms of vitamin A - the synthetic fat-soluble form and the more natural called betacarotene. (converted into vitamin A as per your body's needs). The synthetic form is cheaper but it can build up in the body and cause toxicity. The natural betacarotene (be careful, there is also synthetic betacarotene) absorbs better, and does not have the same toxic effects. So we use the natural form, although it's much more expensive. The same principle applies when it comes to herbal ingredients. Standardised herbal extracts are more expensive, but they ensure consistency of active ingredients from batch to batch. So we incorporate the highest grade of standardised extracts - not the cheapest.

iii)Tri-nalysis
Tri-nalysis is the third of the Tri-synergyT benefits. The Swisse Formula undergo some of the most rigid analytical testing procedures before they are approved for sale. Up to 200 different tests are conducted during the three main stages - analysis of raw materials, manufacturing and finished products testing. Quality control procedures for the Swisse Formulae exceed the minimum requirements set - because Swisse are obsessed with benchmark standards. If raw materials, manufacturing, or the finished product falls short of our benchmark standards, they're rejected. If they meet the benchmark standards, they're accepted. A simple Swisse rule that applies to everything we do from beginning to end. The Swisse formulae are developed around what's best for our well-being regardless of the cost. We research and develop the product and then price it rather than work to some commercial equation. Compare the Swisse Formulae and judge for yourself. With Tri-SynergyT, Swisse sets another benchmark - Clinical Potencies, Tri-Matrix Absorption, and up to 200 QA (quality assurance) tests. Because we choose not to be conventional, and our consumers' health comes first - people come before profits!

5. Are the potencies/dosages in the formula adequate?
Yes, both as a nutritional foundation and for therapeutic benefits. Swisse Women's Ultivite contains all the important nutrients that work in synergy with each other in promoting general well-being...

Therefore as a team, the Swisse formula is scientifically balanced for maximum effectiveness. This is different to taking a high therapeutic dose of any one nutrient for a specific period of time. It's not always the 'highest strength' that achieves best results, but 'correct combination'. That's the objective of the Swisse formulae. At times, for specific health conditions, you need to take other supplements additional to Swisse Women's Ultivite, such as the Swisse Clinicals range, under the direction of your heath care professional, in which case it's best used as a companion product with the Swisse Women's Ultivite which is a nutritional foundation.

6. How long will it take to see results?
Within the first ten days of use many have experienced relief from the symptoms associated with PMT, stress, nervous tension, and mild anxiety.

However this can vary based on the circumstances and nutritional needs of the individual. After the initial few weeks, you may notice a general sense of well-being, and the benefits of good health.

7. Is it suitable to use during pregnancy?
Swisse recommend that you first consult your health care professional. However, the formula can generally be used during pregnancy, as it provides mother and child with nutrients necessary for their well-being, including 500 micrograms of folic acid to assist in the risk reduction of spina bifida.

If taken daily for one month before conception, and during pregnancy, folic acid may reduce the risk of having a child with birth defects of the brain and/or spinal cord, such as neural tube defects known as spina bifida and anencephaly. Do not exceed the dose except under medical advice. Folic acid is best taken in conjunction with other vitamins and minerals, as in the Swisse formula, to prevent a nutritional imbalance and maximise benefits.

8. Can Swisse Women's Ultivite be used with other medication?
Under such circumstances, we advise that you first speak with your Health Care Professional. In general, the formula may be used with other medication, but not simultaneously.

As some medication can decrease the absorption of nutrients from the Women's Ultivite. Some medication can also increase our body's requirements for some vitamins and minerals, and the Swisse Women's formula helps to replenish these nutrients and improve general wellbeing.

9. Will I need to take other products with Swisse Women's Ultivite, for example iron or B vitamins?
Usually not, unless otherwise advised by your health care professional, in which case it should be used as a companion product...

One exception for example, is that you need a higher dose of minerals for strong bones, and Swisse Calverv is recommended for use with Swisse Women's Ultivite. In general however, the Swisse formula is an all rounder with effective potencies eliminating the need to take vitamins in an isolated form. Doing so may cause overdosing and nutritional imbalance. If you take excessive amounts of certain nutrients, for example vitamin B1, this can cause a deficiency of vitamin B3, and result in adverse effects to those hoped for instead of healthy hair and skin, the reverse. Furthermore, taking vitamin B6 on it's own for extended periods of time can have undesirable side effects. The Swisse Women's Ultivite combine an effective dose of scientifically balanced nutrients for maximum results.

10. When is the best time to take Swisse Women's Ultivite? At what age can you start taking it?
In the morning, during or straight after breakfast (all vitamins should be taken with meals).

The product contains stamina nutrients, so avoid taking it at night unless you need the extra vitality. Females 15 years and over can use the Swisse Women's Ultivite. Used as directed, the Tri-Synergy formula ensures that the body uses the required amounts and the balance is excreted to prevent build up or toxicity.

11. I have difficulty swallowing tablets. Is the Swisse Women's Ultivite easy to swallow?
Swisse have recognized this difficulty and have made the product available in both tablet and capsule form.

To facilitate swallowing, all Swisse tablets are coated to provide you with a smooth surface. However, if you prefer capsules, they are also available. Both disintegrate (break up) within 30 minutes, and neither have preservatives, artificial colours or flavours. Apart from a slight variance in potency for calcium citrate and vitamin C (calcium ascorbate), both capsules and tablets are very much the same. Each tablet weighs about 1.5 grams. The capsules have a maximum capacity of about 700 milligrams, therefore 2 capsules are equivalent to one tablet. Capsules also cost about 10% more due to the additional cost of materials and manufacturing processes involved.

12. Is the Swisse Women's Ultivite a slow release formulae?
No, because the Swisse medical team believes the Swisse Tri-Synergy design to be superior.

Tri-Synergy is a scientific balance of nutrients in doses that provide a high level of bioavailability and retention to ensure that you get optimum results throughout the day.

13. What are the key differences between Swisse Women's Ultivite and Swisse Men's Ultivite?
The Swisse Women's Ultivite Multi-vitamin contains nutrients which are specific to relieving symptoms of PMT and promoting vitality.

(use only as directed and see your Health Care Professional if symptoms persist). The formula also has a higher level of B vitamins, calcium, and iron to meet women's nutritional needs. Males need a higher amount of zinc, less B vitamins, iron, and calcium - the Swisse Men's Ultivite reflects these needs. Saw Palmetto and Damiana, only included in the Men's formula, are herbs that promote a healthy male function and enhance male stamina respectively. Each Swisse formula reflects the aforementioned and much more. See ingredients list for full details.

14. Can men use the Swisse Women's Ultivite and vice versa?
Definitely not! Men may develop female characteristics if they use the Women's Ultivite and vice versa... only joking!...

Although both formulas can be used by males and females, it's preferable that the correct formula is used for maximum benefits. The reason is simple - they are designed to meet the specific nutritional needs of women or men.

15. I'm allergic to some preservatives and additives. Do the Swisse formulae contain any ingredients that could trigger a reaction?
Swisse has developed low allergy formulae, wherever possible refraining from the use of ingredients that may trigger an allergic reaction.

The formula does not contain preservatives, artificial colours or flavours. However, some people may have allergies to the most natural of foods. So if you experience discomfort from the use of any product, immediately speak with your health care professional.

16. How long can I take the Swisse Women's Ultivite? Is there a danger if taking indefinitely?
It can be used daily for as long as desired, to assist in maintaining/promoting general well being.

The majority of nutrients in the Swisse formula are water-soluble. This means that the body absorbs what it requires and any remainder is excreted via the urine. Furthermore, the Journal of American Medical Association published a medical article, vol 287, no 23, 19 June 2002, recommending that 'all adults take a multivitamin daily'.**
** This statement was made by Robert H Fletcher, MD MSc, Kathleen M Fairfield in the article 'Vitamins for Chronic Disease Prevention in Adults: Clinical Applications' Journal of American Medical Association, Volume 287, No. 23 June 19, 2002 Page 3127. It was based on the assessment of over 30 years of clinical studies in the area of scientifically validated natural medicine, and the links between nutritional deficiencies and disease. Dr Fletcher and Dr Fairfield are not associated with Swisse and do not recommend any specific brand.

17. Is it normal for the colour of the urine to turn bright yellow from the use of the Swisse formulae?
Yes. These are generally surplus B vitamins being excreted.

What your body requires for that day is utilised, and the remainder is excreted to prevent build up. This also shows that the tablet/capsule has broken up properly in the body.

18. What are the ingredients St. Mary's Thistle, Selenium, Co-enzyme Q10, Lysine and Astragalus in the Swisse Women's Ultivite?
St. Mary's Thistle is a herb that promotes proper liver function, Selenium and Co-enzyme Q10 are of fundamental importance to human health.

Lysine is an amino acid to assist in the treatment and prevention of cold sores. Astragalus is a powerful herb which science has shown to be effective in promoting well-being.

19. Can I rely solely on the Swisse Women's Ultivite for good health?
The Swisse Women's Ultivite is a team player and not the catalyst for good health...

The Swisse 'CLED' (That's 'Celebrate Life Every Day!') philosophy involves following these steps as much as you can;
* Take a Swisse Women's Ultivite during/straight after breakfast
* Exercise 3-4 times per week, even 1/2 hour brisk walks are good
* Consume fresh vegetables, fruits and fish for at least 70% of your meals, indulge occasionally if you wish
* Obtain adequate rest, minimum 6 hours per day
* Take time out to live and don't just exist. Be positive. Smile. Make others happy.
* Consult a Health Care Professional if symptoms of illness persist

20. What is Swisse's 'Project Benchmark Scientific Validation'?
Swisse 'Project Benchmark Scientific Validation' is an investment of millions of dollars in scientific validations, clinical studies and marketing projects to ensure the Swisse products continue to deliver benchmark benefits.

This will assist in keeping the Swisse products at the forefront of medical research. So you can expect the formulae to change from time to time to reflect medical advancements, our evolving lifestyle, and fundamentally assist you in best achieving the benefits that you desire. It's all about putting our consumer first and investing in your future health.
