Caralluma fimbriata has been used in Western India for centuries as a famine food, appetite suppressant and thirst quencher among the tribal population there. The people within the tribe would chew chunks of the plant to suppress hunger and thirst during hunting expeditions. In parts of semi rural and urban South India, laborers chew its stalks before undertaking the day’s labors to enhance endurance. Preliminary scientific studies have found that Caralluma may exert appetite suppressing effects by enhancing satiety communication from the gut to the brain (through the hormone Leptin). It has been proposed that Leptin is involved in regulating perception of satiety and it is through this mechanism that Caralluma is thought to assert its appetite suppressing effects.
