May reduce the risk of birth defects.
What's It For?
A folate supplement which if taken daily for one month before conception and during pregnancy, may reduce the risk of a woman having a child with birth defects of the brain and/or spinal cord.
Active Ingredients Per Tablet:
Folic acid 500 mcg.
Special Features and Benefits:
Convenient one a day dosage.
Supplementary folic acid is recommended prior to and throughout pregnancy.
Mode of Action:
Foetal formation increases the mother's need for folic acid and deficiency is common during pregnancy. Supplementation of folic acid is recommended for at least one month prior to conception and for the duration of the pregnancy, and may reduce the incidence of neural tube defects in the unborn child.
Deficiency of folic acid is common in the general population, resulting from prolonged stress, chronic alcoholism, viral infection and liver disease. When folic acid is lacking, red blood cells become enlarged and oxygen carrying capacity is reduced, resulting in symptoms of breathlessness, headache, pallor, muscle fatigue and exhaustion. Additionally, deficiency of folic acid (along with vitamin B6), is associated with elevated plasma levels of homocysteine.
Contraindications and Cautions:
Do not exceed the stated dose of folic acid. If you have had a baby with a neural tube defect you should seek specific medical advice before using this product.
Always read the label. Use only as directed.
None noted in the literature at the recommended dosage.
