Ivy Leaf

  • Ivy leaf has a history of well-established uses in European herbal medicinal products as an expectorant for productive cough.
  • Several studies have been conducted to show the safety and efficacy of the therapy with H. helix extract in inflammatory bronchial diseases.
  • In a prospective, open, multicentre postmarketing study in 9657 patients, improvement or absence of symptoms
was observed in 95.1% of the patients after treatment with Ivy leaf.

Echinacea

  • Current evidence supports its use as an acute treatment for upper respiratory tract infections, with some evidence supporting its use as a prophylactic treatment.
  • Echinacea has been described as a nonspecific immunostimulant. This means that it has no antigenic relationship to specific pathogens, but its action results from the stimulation of cell-mediated immune responses such as phagocytosis and the release of cytokines and other serum factors.
  • Echinacea has been used traditionally in herbal medicine as supportive therapy for colds and chronic infections of the
    respiratory tract.

Licorice

  • Traditionally used in Chinese medicine to help relieve cough and wheezing and can be used for either productive or nonproductive coughs.
  • Licorice has many effects in the body, the most well-established ones being reducing inflammation and treating infections such as bronchitis and cough.
  • Studies indicate that licorice possesses antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties.

Japanese Honeysuckle

  • Has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of abscess, laryngitis, pharyngitis, infection of the upper respiratory tract, common cold and fever.
  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation.
  • May interact with immunosuppressive medication.
  • Allergic reactions may occur rarely in susceptible patients sensitised to echinacea aerial parts and to plants from the
    Compositae family.
  • Drug interactions are unlikely when taking Ki Cough & Cold Liquid at the recommended dose. However, if a child
has serious medical condition or is on prescription medications, it is recommended that parents consult with a
    prescribing practitioner.
  • Caution against using echinacea in patients with autoimmune disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus
erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as tuberculosis or leucocytosis. However, these contraindications are based on theoretical considerations and case reports. In practice, echinacea has been successfully used by herbalists in autoimmune disease without mishap.Licorice should be used with caution in people with hypertension (or a genetic predisposition to hypertension) or fluid retention, and is contraindicated in hypotonia, severe renal insufficiency, hypokalaemia, liver cirrhosis and cholestatic liver disease, though the effects are likely to be dose-dependent and more likely in people with essential hypertension with a particular tendency to 11HSD inhibition by licorice.
  • Licorice is contraindicated in people with a deficiency in 11HSD or with genetic mutation in the HSD11B2 gene.
  • Licorice may reduce testosterone levels in men and should be used with caution in men with a history of impotence,
    infertility or decreased libido.
